Screwed....lost two head bolts
« on: July 15, 2014 - 07:54:49 PM »
Ok well finally got to putting my motor back together...got one side done and realized I was missing an upper and lower head bolt...somewhere between the machine shop and my house I managed to lose them..what the heck do I do???  Tighten up what I have leaving the last two bolt spots empty until I can score one??  This really sucks..... Anybody have a upper and lower head bolt lying around :clueless:

Do not tighten what you have!!!
Wait till you have a full set then go thru the tighten sequence.
Someone here might have a few.
What size motor?

340....sorry. I figured. Does it matter as far as the head sitting on the block without being tightened?  I was told both ways..

Where are you located?  If you're close to MA I have some you can have for free.  If not, posting your location will let others local to you know who may have some for you.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

1972 Dodge Challenger convertible 440 5 speed.
1973 Dodge Challenger 318 "Brown Bomber"

This might be a good time to invest in some ARP head bolts or get some locally.

Ask your machine shop; they might have them in stock, or have some laying around; Maybe yours. Don't torque until you have all of them but you can put the head in place if you want to.
1963 Dodge M37 (3)
1967 Dodge WM300 (2)
1971 Plymouth Duster
Bought new in '71; I wanted the Challenger but they were $2850; too much $ so I got the 318, 3 speed on the floor, Twister Duster for $2100.
1973 Plymouth Barracuda
I ain't done yet.

Surely to God there's an auto wrecker somewhere near you. A 318, 340 or 360 all use the same bolts and a trip out to the engine pile with the right socket and Johnson bar would do the trick. Scrap metal guys also usually have engines laying around, just find a Mopar and you're set. Just my  :2cents:
