Brake master cylinder pushrod removal
« on: August 24, 2014 - 06:44:13 PM »
I converted to 4 wheel disc brakes SSB kits and keeping it manual. Any way, I have to use their master. I need to remove my pushrod and swap it into the new master. Is it just the snap ring and put it in the vice and hammer it off? My book says that there is a valve screw. I don't have one in my master. So I figured I'd ask prior to braking something. Pun intended.  Thanks for the help!

with manual brakes there is a rubber o ring that retains the pushrod in the rear of the piston , silicone lube help but you generally damage the O ring removing the pushrod put it into a vice & gently pry the pushrod out of the piston

So I assume I'll need to buy a new O ring then to use in the SSB master. Is it a "special" O ring or something I can use from my universal O ring kit?

It's not a normal O-ring. You might still be able to get it from a dealer. If I remember correctly, it isn't a cheap piece.

Why do you have to use their master?

Because he is using 4 wheel discs so you need a different master , a rebuilder like Cardone can get the O rings

You don't have to use a special master. I'm going to use a newer aluminum master from the 80's cars and trucks. The kind Dr Diff sells with his brake kits. There is nothing special about them.

The reservoir size for the rear brakes is twice a large as the stock one. Every topic I have read says if converting to disc brakes you have to use a different master. I had manual all drum and the masters are clearly than those that had factory front disc. Besides that, after waiting to be used after 11 years in my basement, you wouldn't use the original one either. She be in bad shape.

Drum brake master cylinder incorperate a holding valve that holds about 8 psi pressure in the lines, disc brake master cylinders don't hold and line pressure.

They used to...but not any more.  They did away with those valves and started putting springs in the wheel cylinders.  You can use a drum brake master but you are correct that the reservoir size is different.  What I was getting at is that you don't have to use "THEIR" master.  You can pick any one you want.  A lot of people use the disc/drum masters from the later model mopar vehicles.  You just have to get the adapter to mount the newer two bolt master.  The up side is that they are readily available at a local parts store if you ever have to replace it.

Let me know where you find the new O-ring.  I'll probably need one too.

Every master for drum brakes I have worked on has a residual pressure valve built in , you can remove it by threading a dry wall screw into the brass insert / pulling the brass out gently , there is a small rubber valve behind the brass cone shaped insert

I got the push rod out with no issues. My O rings look to be in great shape and as a bonus, the 2 on the SSB valve are the same so I swapped them just to use new ones. I should be good to go now. As far as the master is concerned anyway. Got to figure out the proportioning valve and distribution block stuff next. So new topic coming soon.   burdar, I did misunderstand what you wrote about using "theirs" we're all good now. Thanks
