firewall insulation question
« on: September 30, 2014 - 06:28:14 PM »
I ordered a firewall insulation kit for a 71 cuda with air and it came with push christmas tree type fasteners do I use those or the firewall nails? I ordered both.

Also does anyone have a picture cause I can't seem to figure out how they all go. Does the piece behind the heater box get glued? Does the under dash insulation get glued aswell?.

Throw away the Christmas tree plugs and use the nails. For A/C I believe one piece does glue to the box itself and yes the upper dash insulation gets glued on. :2cents:

Under dash is glued; originally it was cheap blanket material. Firewall pad is a piece of cardboard with fiberglass like insulation glued to it and that is held on the firewall with the plastic pins. I used new sponge carpet pad glued to the top and dynamat on the firewall.  With an OEM type of cardboard pad on that, which was probably not necessary but I couldn't help it.

I used the 3M 90 so you know down the road it will still have adhesion. The 77 will deteriorate over time.

For pad insulation I use 3M Spray adhesive (orange can), also for carpet. If you use Dynamat type stuff on the firewall then you don't need the cardboard/fiberglas piece too. But I put it on just in case.... It is quiet but the cardboard probably didn't help.  For weatherstripping I use 3M; I can't find the tube right now. But it is very strong stuff.
