I plan on fixng up the '72 Challenger for a decent driver. The car has the original 318 that has been completely rebuilt. The guy had about $2K in the build so I would like to use it. It has a 270H Comp Cam (270/270, 224/224@0.050., .470 lift, 110*LS), 0.030" over pistons, and the heads were gone through. He put a Eddy performer manifold, 600 carb, and headers on it.
The automatic is junk and I plan to put a 833 OD 4 speed in it. How does a 3.23 gear with overdrive sound? I drive 40 miles to work each day and I hoped the overdrive's 2.40 gear would give decent higway mileage. I will run the factory 14" road wheels with around a 26" tire. Right now it has 2.71 gears with the auto. I have the 3.23 489 case already so that is what I would like to use. Do you think the 318 will handle 2.40 gearing or will it run to low of rpm on the highway with the cam?
Thanks for the input.
