Weird bracket in the way/727/BPE Kickdown Kit Install question
« on: September 22, 2014 - 08:50:14 AM »
Hi everyone,

So, I'm finishing the install of my BPE kickdown cable kit.  It's pretty easy/straightforward, except I'm running into one minor snag.

In the attached picture, I'm running into trouble in the highlighted area.  Installing the nut/bolt/washer looks straightforward enough, however on my 727, there is currently a black L bracket.  It doesn't appear to be doing anything.  There is a round hole in the bottom, sort of like something should be routed through it, but isnt.  I'm pretty much committed to removing it at this point, and this is where I'm running into some trouble.

It's got a flat head.  Almost like a carriage bolt.  Theres a nut on the bottom, but I'm having a hard time getting at it.  It seems like there's not enough clearance for any of my deep sockets to get in there.

Wasn't able to take any pictures because well...the car isn't high enough off the ground for me to weasel a camera in there.

I'm planning on coming back it the thing tonight.

I realize that its probably hard to ID this bracket/how to remove it without a picture.  Hopefully, when you see the picture (BPE's photo), you'll be able to spot would would've been there.

The closest thing I can come up with on google image search is a colmun shift linkage bracket.  The one on my car is black and has no bushing.  I'm not even sure that what is on my car IS a column shift bracket.  Just the closest thing I can come up with.  My car is a floor shift and always was.  Which probably means the transmission was replaced, I guess.

Any idea what this mystery bracket is and how to remove it?

Thank you!

That bracket had two purposes in 1970. I take it, yours is not the original tranny to you car, so you'll have no problem tossing it.
You're correct it was used for column shift cars, but also in 1970 it was used for steering column lock-out rods as well, which most people tossed ...

Thanks so much for the quick reply Alan,

Any idea HOW to get it out of there?  The head is pretty flat to the bracket, so I can't come at it from the top.

Clearance is tight from the bottom.  Any tips or tricks on removal of this thing?  Will a standard deep socket do it?  Am I just not using brute force to muscle the socket onto it?

Thanks again!

Bob

Don't know, maybe a flex socket or stubby wrench ?

Hey Bob!

If you will get rid of that bracket, can you toss it in an envelope (sell it to me)?

You don't need to remove that bracket, just take the nut off and add the BPE spring holder washer to existing bolt.

I got it loose.

Didn't think to use a breaker bar  :banghead:

Once I did (and found the right socket) came off in a minute :)

Already put the part in the mail to moparstyle!

Thanks everyone!

Dutch, My man...

Might have the bracket on the opposite side, bolted on the frame rail?

The second item from right side, to the left of the long rod.
Probably specific for column shifted cars.
