Installing EFI with fuel return lines - gas tank?
« on: November 25, 2014 - 02:25:38 PM »
Guys, I got a stock gas tank in my 71 Cuda with a 440. I'm about to install Holley Terminator EFI (550-405 and 526-4 kits) and looking how to install the fuel return line to the tank. Is there a sending unit with a "return" inlet? Or do I need to build something for myself? Read that someone modified the filler tube to "return" the gas to the tank when using EFI.

cheers!

I just went through this. I bought a sending unit for a 440+6/Hemi which has a 3/8 feed and a 1/4 return. Then I replaced the 1/4 return with a 5/16 tube that ran further into the tank. I bought two, one of each size, pre-bent MAIN FUEL lines and ran them side by side. :2cents:

Yea! Nice! Thats the way to go! I will run rubber hoses including in the kit for return as well as primary. They are 3/8 I think so I need to do some small modifications anyway.

Where did you find that sending unit for hemi?

Vans has the pickup with the 3/8 pickup and 1/4 return. There is also a 1/2" pickup available.

For mine, I drilled out the 1/4" tube and soldered in a 5/16 tube. Another common way is to put a nipple into the fill tube and let it dump back in that way.

Without a sump, I always remember to fill up at 1/4 tank.  This isn't always a problem since my MPG has gone way up.

 :iagree:

Except I bent my own lines.  Two years (I have a 440+6) in and no issues what so ever.  I run 48 lbs of fuel pressure.  No starvation and no return issues.

Something to consider...
I originally did the return line when I setup my FAST EZ EFI system... mounted the pump near the fuel tank (behind the rear seat)...  the pump was a "quiet" walbro...
A year later I switched to the eddelbrock fuel sump to get rid of the noisy fuel pump...
I don't need a return line (or extra fuel pump or pressure regulator) and have had no issues.
