Steering bearing noises
« on: December 17, 2014 - 10:49:01 PM »
I have been living with an annoying sound, especially when the car is cold, and Im backing out at low speeds. Somewhere in the upper bearing area it makes a whining noise. At least it sure sounds like its coming from that area.
Is it probably the bearing, and how easy is it to replace/fix?
Thanks.

No and no.
The sound is clearly coming from inside the dash area.
It cant be heard from outside the car.

Does it only happen when you are in reverse?  I am not sure if the 71 has it, but the 70 column has an interlock that changes position when you are in reverse (manual trans).  Does your car have that? Could be something is worn in that area or something is broken and rubbing.  I will check my pics and drawings to see if I have any ideas.

FWIW, overhauling the column is pretty easy if you take your time.  The only special tool needed is a steering wheel puller.

I'll give it a try. Ive had my steering wheel/crush can off several times so once more hopefully I can get to the bearing.
