Small engine parts
« on: December 13, 2014 - 10:22:09 AM »
In my very slow gathering of parts for an engine rebuild, I was thinking about ordering rings, bearings, and a crank. Who makes a good bearing or a good ring? Are there companies to stay away from?
Clevite comes up for bearings a lot
Speed pro seems popular for rings.
Any recommendations?

ACL- (supposedly Australian Clevite) and Federal Mogul and Pioneer are some others bearingswise. Grant, Hastings, SRP, Perfect Circle, Mahle have all been around the ring biz a long time and many are and/or were, oem suppliers. I've got to figure out a way to get that timing set to you. They changed my job and it's no more trips to TB!  :stomp:

One other question. Satndard tension rings? Low tension rings? What are the different tensions for?

standard tension replacement ring sets. low tension are for race engines to reduce rotating friction. they would only cause you heartache in a street engine.

the thickness of the ring matters too, I think?
I used thinner rings on my 496.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

The ring size will be predicated by the piston used. Old school were usually 5/64", but you now see 1/16", .043 and 1.5mm quite often.
