41-51 Amp Alternator
« on: January 31, 2015 - 11:28:01 AM »
The only engine harness listed by Year One for 1972 340 Challenger says for 41-51 Amp Alternator and electronic ignition.

The rest of my car is wired with their harness (excellent).  It has been on back order and is on its way.

I purchased a 75 Amp Alternator during my restoration.  Will this alternator work?  Or do I need to get another alternator with less amps?

Thanks.

It will work. The original harness what just not designed for 75 amps. But the alt will only put out what the system needs. If you are not an originality guy, do the bh connector bypass and connect the o/p of your alt straight to your battery.  :2cents:

I ran a 75 alt on mine with stock harness and had no issues.

For what it's worth, I just removed and tested my existing alternator. I figured it was a 60 amp at best. Turns out it is an 85 amp alternator. I have been running it with the stock wiring ( no ammeter bypass, no direct alt charge wire to starter relay, spade terminals at bulkhead) and have not had any issues other that ineffective battery charging and dim head lights. No sign of any heat damage found with that setup. Nonetheless, I plan on installing a Tuff Stuff 100 amp and doing all the above mentioned mods along with relays.

as long as everything is good the alt will only put out enough amps to match the draw , so maybe 20-40 amps max with all the accessories on , the problem is if there is extra load with a bad battery or similar where the alternator puts out max power then thingsw ill get hot & melt down . you are far safer with a 10 ga bypass to the start relay from the alt output terminal
