Speedo gear change
« on: May 10, 2005 - 03:49:05 AM »
While wanting to change my speedo gear so that my speedometer is more accurate, I've hit a snag. What is this bracket running to the right of my speedo cable? It seems to be in the way. It looks to be held on by 2 bolts, but I want to know if I remove it, will all heck break loose?  :dontknow: Anyone seen this before? Thanks.

That is the lower pivot point for the console shifter.
Just unbolt it and remove it. Replace the speedo gear.
And reinstall it. without the bracket the car won't shift.

You mean my car has more than one gear???  :dontknow:

Seriously, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't opening a can of worms here if I removed that bracket. I hate jobs where you have to remove 10 different things to get at what you want. Thanks purple1.

make sure you have a drain pan handy , the tranny will dump most of the fluid from there

OK,
I withstood my tranny fluid bath today. Now I have a new problem. The speedo doesn't work. :stomp: I was careful to put the speedo cable into the new gear before I inserted it back into the assembly, but I think maybe the gear isn't making contact inside???  :dontknow: The front plate of the assembly where the cable connects to is somewhat oblong. Meaning the gear doesn't sit in the middle. I swear I have it in the same position I took it out in, but maybe not. Sorry for the lack of a picture. Does anybody have an idea? Thanks.

The speedometer gear can be installed in different positions.
It depends on how many teeth are on the gear.
Count the teeth and line up the gear. The range of teeth is printed
on the gear housing.

I have done this before.  :banghead:

I can't believe I'm doing this... BUT.. April told me that I was putting the gear housing back in the wrong position. Yep... she HELPED me. I'm stunned... Really, there is NO other way to describe it. TOTALLY stunned.  :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:

No Rev,
