rear 8 3/4 housing 741 /742 differences
« on: February 18, 2015 - 02:25:28 PM »
all,

I have a 8 3/4 with housing # 741
question is can a ring and pinion gear for a 742 housing be put in 741 housing?

reason being I have a perfect 741 complete rear end but it has 2.76 gears.
I want closest to original 3.23 but can only find similar ratios for the 742 housing.

will a ring and pinion gear sold for a 742 fit into 741, if not what's the differences.

thank you

This link shows the differences in the pinion gears.  I do not believe they interchange.  There are 3.55 and 3.73 gears available for the 741.

No, they do not interchange at all. You must have a gear set compatible with the case casting number you are using. You could swap in an entirely different  third member of any casting # with the gear set you want, however.

thanks for the info, I was afraid of that...
but one last search before I was just going to go with new Motive brand gear 3.55 for 741 case, and
I found an original 3.23 pinion and ring gear from a 741 housing on ebay!!
bought it, Yahtzee!!!
