Installing Shaker Base Plate/Hood Seal
« on: February 23, 2015 - 02:39:50 PM »
Anyone have any tips on installing a new shaker base plate to hood seal? I'm going to glue it with weatherstrip adhesive, but it doesn't look like it will be easy. Looks like I'll have to spread the seal open to apply the adhesive and hope I don't glue the seal to itself. I thought I'd glue it to the underside of the base plate first and then do the top side. Also I plan on doing both sides in small increments as well as cutting seal to length after I have it almost fully glued. My experience is that the length is never perfectly accurate if you cut it before you glue. Any tips appreciated.

I put the seam in the back so I don't have to look at it.If you cut the seam to short it will never look right.Doing it the way you stated is the safest  way of doing it.

I placed glue on the top and bottom of the baseplate and let it set for a minute or so and did about 12" at a time. I also bought a bag of wooden clothes pins at wally world and placed them every couple of inches. I placed the split at the back and used a piece of rubber hose (sorry forgot what size) inside to hold it together and to help keep the ends aligned. After it sat overnight I then bolted down the shaker with wax paper separating the seal from the shaker and left it that way until I'm ready for the final install later sometime. I used the wax paper knowing that there would be some glue leak out and at least this way I would have a better chance of getting the top off easier the first time.

Maybe I don't know wtf I'm talking about, but I'll find out when it gets warm out and I'm ready to drive it again.  :D
