Looking for rear frame rail repair pictures
« on: February 25, 2015 - 01:11:19 PM »
Hi folks,

My rear frame rails are in bad shape. I did a search for frame rail repairs, but most of the links to the pictures are broken. So if you've done a repair, partial, or full replacement of the rear frame rail, can you please post some pictures?

Here is my situation. The inside of the rails under the trunk are really rusted. I don't yet know the condition of the rail under the rear seat area (gonna check tonight). A previous owner has attempted to patch the rail and really just made the problem worse.

My options:
1. Media blast the inside of the rails and patch where necessary.
2. Full replacement rails.
3. Partial replacement from the trunk back.

I'd like to do a full replacement, but I'm just really nervous to cut such an important part of the car out. The driver quarter is already off, the roof, the tail light panel, and part of the trunk.

Advise please  :pullinghair:

Replace the whole frame rail. Looks like you have to replace the trunk floor so your halfway there. It's not that hard to do, just a lot of drilling and grinding. I made braces out of scrap tubing and angle iron and bolted it to the frame rails across and down before I took it apart so I knew it would be in the same location when I but it back together. AMD rails fit real good.

Thanks for all the pictures and advise folks. I must admit that I was panicking a bit yesterday. I think I'll only need to replace the rear trunk section of the frame rails. I cut into the floor to look inside the rails under the back seat. It's not as bad as I thought. Should be able to sand blast and patch.

I'm going to sand blast this weekend and see what I'm left with.

I used these guys for rail caps on the rear frame rails. Rather than patching and trusting the strength of the metal I was welding to I decided this was the safest way to go. Unless you are doing a numbers matching restoration this was a quick cheap way to go.
