Lost my key :(
« on: April 01, 2015 - 03:20:51 PM »
Hello all...

Went to start the 73 Challenger the other day and my Challenger key was not on my key ring. No tellin' where it's at or how long it's not been on there. Problem is, stupid me never had a copy made, so I'm stuck without a key. I know there are some locksmith services that offer to make a key without me having to take the ignition out and stuff (that's a PAIN, plus, if I'm gonna do that, I might as well order a new ignition and key set). One service quoted me 185 to come to the house and make a key. Do I have any other options? I also called the dealership to see if they could make one off the vin number and their books only go back to 1990.

Thanks!

A new ignition/keys runs about $30, and an hour or so of work :2cents:

:iagree:  The hardest part will be removing the crush can if you don't have a puller.  You can easily make one though.

That's what I'm gonna do. My local O'Reilly's actually has some in stock.

Haha I already have one made from where I had to get down in there to work on some wiring a couple years ago!  Thanks y'all

Instead of taking the ignition cylinder out, which is a plain, why not take the door lock cylinder in and have it made from that.

If the door lock is the same ....
Any auto locksmith can make you a key from the cylinder & or repin them to work better

Yep, and I believe the glove box lock is also the same as the ignition and a wee bit easier to get at. Make 4 keys- they'll come in handy and don't forget to make extras for the trunk, too.
