rear height options, only two for me, which one
« on: March 08, 2015 - 04:09:54 PM »
Team, I have a 73 Cuda that I'm looking at raising the rear by around 1.5", I have two options available to me, one is have the 4 1/2 leaves re arched, the other is add another leaf under the main.
Which is my better option in regard to handling and performance?  as the car sits now the rear leaf spring sits almost flat, ride is good, cornering is ok, rear brakes lock up a little if im breaking into a corner.
Right now I'm leaning toward re arching, keeping the weight down etc. if I'm going to re arch, what info will the spring guys need to know? I assume the rear weight of the car???? does anyone know that?

I had mine re-arched. They added a leaf when they did it. They said if they don't add a leaf that the re-arching would start to sag in about three months because the old steel is fatigued.

Interesting, I have a set of main leaves to cut the eyes off so I might start with that, see where it ends up I guess, if its not to harsh I can probably leave it at that then.

I had to add a leaf to my Challenger springs to get the rear up too.

In their installed position, Mopar leaf should appear to be almost flat and adding height is actually a detriment to handling and alignment. However, with that said and they desire to get some more space under it, I'd go with the add a leaf first. This should give a slight lift while increasing the spring rate to produce an overall improvement in both lift and feel.

Do you know what the ride height is off hand (say from the ground the middle of the wheel arch)?

Thanks HP2, that was my understanding of Mopar rear springs as well for handling and so on, hence my asking.

Jas, right now I have 24 1/4" all round fender lip to floor. I dont want to lower the front any more but would like to just slightly change the stance of the car by raising the rear a smidge.

Thanks man,  Mine currently sits at 29 inches at the rear wheel lip.  I want to drop it down a bit.  I like the look of yours now.

:2thumbs: I like the way it sits now. I wouldn't raise the rear any more.

Thanks Dodj, I plan on fitting some 18" diam wheels with 27" diam tires so slightly taller tyres, I would like to raise the front a 1/2-1" for header clearance and the rear  a full 1" so to look at it the rake should not change much, that said, I like a Cuda with the trunk line level not sloping back like mine is right now.
