upgrading brakes. brands and opinions
« on: March 20, 2015 - 11:27:54 PM »
Im looking to upgrade the front drums in my '72 cuda. I am wanting to put some performance discs in there but am not sure which brands to stat looking at. I was originally wanting wilwoods but I think only a few have dust boots. Sadly I'll have to drive over a bit of gravel to get to anywhere and probably need the dust boots. What are your experiences with different brands. They wont be put through any real extreme driving conditions, but want real quality ones just the same

I would recommend Dr. Diff. I talked with Cass before making a purchase and he was real helpful. I bought Stage 4 "Brembo" style front brakes. Probably overkill unless I get to autocross my car as much as I would like to.

I'm not all that familiar with drum knuckles, but I know Dr. Diff has a kit that allows you to use Viper brake calipers with your drum spindles. http://www.doctordiff.com/viper-caliper-mounting-brackets-for-mopar-drum-knuckles.html

I put these rotors,

with the stock calipers and ceramic pads by bendix and am very happy with how they work. My brakes used to fade in that I had to push harder as they got hotter. It is now the opposite. This combination bites harder as they get hotter and I can ease up on the pedal a bit.
You would need to get the front spindles off a 73-74 ebody I believe.
Of course the stock Mopar caliper doesn't look as kewl as a wilwood or brembo caliper.

IMHO... it also depends on what wheels you plan on running. Certain brake kits require a 16-17" wheel minimum....  :grinyes:
