put a mark on the damper 2 3/8" clockwise from the TDC mark & that is 36*

OK that sounds easy so how many RPM should be full advance ?

OK, found some time today to have a play with the timing, set at 12* initial & around 34* total. Just curious, should the idle speed increase when I reconnect the vac advance after timing, & does this mean I have vac advance already at idle ?

Also removed thermostat housing for a look & lo & behold, no thermostat fitted. I'm thinking my warmer temp at highway speed is possibly because the coolant was flowing too quickly through the radiator. Bought a hi-volume 170* t/stat, & flushed & replaced all the coolant. Going on a cruise on Sunday, so fingers crossed, will see how it goes.

Running without the  thermostat can definatly cause overheating so it seems you found the problem .
 I would leave the vacuum disconnected , if it increases speed connecting it you either have it connected to manifold vacuum which is incorrect or your ported vacuum source has vacuum at idle which it shouldn't , generally the engine will run better & be more responsive with improved power & milage with the timing increased as you have done , adding vacuum advance is not going to help as it will over advance now , so either wind the screw inside the vacuum pot all the way CCW or disconnect the hose so it cannot advance .

Thats good news Steve, I just did what CP recommends, wound the VA pot screw all the way CCW until it started clicking/jumping the thread. and blocked off my vacum. Car runs great.

Just a update on above. Car cruised at 190*f max all day with new t/stat & much more responsive now with tweaked timing & blocked off vac advance. Thanks all for your advice.
