A833 Noise
« on: January 07, 2014 - 11:06:22 PM »
Hey folks,

This has been bugging me for a while and I am hoping you can help me diagnose this so that it will be fixed before I get home. When the clutch pedal is pushed, the transmission makes a strange noise that is kind of a loud whirring noise. When the pedal is released it goes away. It is like the opposite of what a throw out bearing would do. I was thinking maybe it is the pilot bushing or the input shaft bearing but Im not sure. Has anyone run into something like this before?

Drew

When you push the clutch pedal the throw out brg is under load , with the pedal released it just floats so yes it sounds like a throw out brg , could be the pilot brg also

I've put three bearings in. Unless the store had bad bearings...

I'll try a pilot bushing too. I just want to avoid a rebuild if I can

I doubt you need a rebuild if everything is quiet when the clutch pedal is up & the clutch is engaged

Well that makes me happy. Should I try the pilot bearing that brewers offers since my car was an auto that I swapped over.

I had an issue the same. I converted from 340/4 spd to 451B/4 spd and changed to a cast iron 10-1/2 bell housing from a 64 383/413 car. Used an incorrect fork pivot and it twisted the fork sideways when the pedal was depressed and placed uneven pressure on the TO bearing which in turn made that whirring grinding noise. Pivot change has cured this. So if your car is not all stock then I would check this. Jaimie Passon helped here while I was receiving my 5 speed as I simply sent him pictures and he came back and said incorrect pivot. BTW that Passon 5 is one sweet juicy box. Shifts beautiful and makes the car modern smooth.

If anyone needs the info on this, the input shaft was too long and had to be cut about 1/8th inch. all my noise is gone. Im still having issues with 1-2 gears but all in due time

So the input shaft was riding on the crank?

Crazy how it's too long, we are talking about a 23 spline 833 right? My next question is this a convert from auto to 4 speed?

yep, it was riding the crank and making a horrid noise. It was a swap and a 23 spline. I ended up cutting off at the factory bevel on the input shaft and then creating my own bevel.

the other solution is to deepen the hole in the crank
