Colorado year of manufacture plates
« on: April 10, 2015 - 09:21:05 AM »
I just found out about this a few weeks ago and I was just wondering if anyone else here in Colorado has gone thru the process. You have to locate and purchase a pair of original Colorado vintage plates and register them to your classic car.
 I picked up a pair of 1970 plates for my Challenger today and will be sending in the paper work soon.

Each state is different.  Some require more paperwork then others.  In Iowa, you don't have to register the number with the DMV at all.  You just have to carry the state issued plates in the car.(under the seat)  If you are ever pulled over, you need to be able to show the officer the state issued plates.  Some states require the plates to be original...not repro.  The wording in the Iowa code is vague and open to interpretation.  I run repro plates on my Challenger.  I also carry a copy of the Iowa code that allows "Year of Manufacture" plates so I can prove they are legal if they are ever questioned.

Original plate on top...repro on bottom.

I did it for my '71 Challenger.  It doesn't cost anything, just time and effort to fill out the form and send/bring it to the CO Motor Vehicle on 18th and Pierce.  Be sure to include a photocopy of the plates.  They will send you back a "permission slip" that you need to have in your car in case you get pulled over.  Technically you can only have them on going to/from a show or charity event for the car.  However, I believe everyday I drive my car is a charity event!   :2thumbs:

The way I read it they can be used anytime as they are going under the same rules as a Horseless Carriage. I’m no lawyer but here is the current statute, I asked a traffic officer I know about it a few days ago. He had no idea what I was talking about, so I will be carrying a copy of the statute with my registration.

CRS 42-12-302. Original plates

A person shall not drive the vehicle bearing the original plates except as
authorized in section 42-12-301 (5).

CRS 42-12-301
(5) A person may drive a motor vehicle with the special registration plates
authorized by this section or section 42-12-302 on the streets and highways, but only:
(a) To and from assemblies, conventions, or other meetings where such vehicles
and their ownership are the primary interest;
(b) On special occasions, for demonstrations and parades;
(c) On occasions when the operation of the vehicle on the streets and highways
will not constitute a traffic hazard;
and
(d) To, from, and during local, state, or national tours held primarily for the
exhibition and enjoyment of such vehicles.

I knew they authorized this some time ago, however, at the time I first heard about it way back when, all the caveats about where/when they can be used were not part of the proposal. You also had to take your plates to the Denver DMV where they were visually inspected to ensure they were in good condition and their numbers were then run against the existing plate database to ensure they were not already in use somewhere. then you were cleared to use them, and at that time, it was a bolt them on and go situation.

While still very cool, I'm not sure all that hassle is worth it to only use them for the occasional trip to auto related things. But if I change my mind, I've got pairs of plates from '67 to '76 hanging on the garage wall that I can choose from. The '75-76 plates are red, white, and blue centennial versions that were only used those two years, in addition to the other dual years listed in the article.

I live in West Virginia and have year of manufacture plates on my '70 Challenger. They cost $35.00 and are good for 10 years. :jumping:

The centennial plates are sweet! Most other years back to the '50s can be found relatively inexpensive at any swap meet.
