Actual sidewall width req for 275/60 15 please
« on: April 16, 2015 - 05:59:28 PM »
Hi Team,
can someone who has 15x10 rims fitted with a 275 tire measure the actual full width when fitted to the rim please, that is side wall to side wall, in either a 50 or a 60 series tire please, Im having trouble locating that sze tire in stores down here to trial fit.

Thanks 73440, but you will notice it shows the sectional width (tread???) is that the actual side wall to side wall max width? It doesn't seem to change when different rim widths are applied, unless I have got it wrong

This is the first time using this one, cant find other calculator I used.
Yeah, I cant get it change either , it just squashes the tire but no width change.

This might help with understanding the calculations: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=198

Their quote"The industry rule of thumb is that for every 1/2" change in rim width, the tire's section width will correspondingly change by approximately 2/10".

Also, the 255, 275, 295, etc for street tires are typically the section width, or widest portion of the tire. The tread width is less than the section width by up to a few inches. In competition tires, they are usually measure in tread width and diameter instead of mm and aspect ratio.

Thanks HP2, I have 15x10 with 5 1/2" BS, the rim is approx 1 1/4" from the spring but close to the fender lip which I dont want to roll so side wall and profile are critical. right now, untill I change to B Body housing Im very close to the fender lip so hence the question, I see 275/50 as about max, just hard to find down here.

275/50x15 is hard to find everywhere.  While many sizes were available 20 years ago, these have been whittled down to only the most popular these days. A 275/50 would be a very short tire, so not many people would want one. 275/60 and 295/50 are the two most popular large width 15" tires these days. However, you may be able to use a MT SR that is 26x10x15. This is about the equivilent of a 255/55x15.

Just taking a stab at it, a 275/60 on a 10" rim should have the tire sticking out about 3/8 to 1/2 inch per side past the lip of the wheel. With 1.25" to the spring pack, you have plenty of room. Even with it being closer to the wheel opening, you should still have room.

BTW, your 5.5 backspace may not be compatible with a B body rear because the housings narrower overall width means you need less backspace on the wheel. It used to be that finding wheels with high backspace amounts was not easy, thus the B body housing swap. Now days, high  offset wheels are the norm so finding a large backspace to be compatible with the stock E housing is easier to do. However, you would still need to move the springs in some to avoid interference to achieve ultimate tire. Careful measuring before you swap should yield an answer.

BTW, when you say 1 1/4" from the spring, is that up front by the hanger or out back by the shackle? E body springs are angled and this measurement is not consistent front to back.

HP2, again, thanks. Good info.
That measurement is at the front of the spring, rear is a little more.
Im swapping to a B body housing and relocating srings so the BS issue remains similar, a B body housing is approx 3/4" narrower each side and the springs are an 1" further inboard each side so that should put the wheel a 1/4" closer to the spring however I'm going to run discs which will somewhat cancel some of the 1/4". These 15" wheels were purchased so as I had a set of drag radials, ET's etc and to enable closer measurements so I an order the 18" wheels I want for the street cruising. My hope is to enable 18x11 once the diff is changed out so these wont have as much side wall either.

Mine is 18X11 (5.5 backspacing)with a B-Body width rear end so it will fit!  :2thumbs:
