Question for those using Flaming River steering coupler
« on: April 14, 2015 - 07:20:18 PM »
I'm gathering parts to convert the wife's 1971 R/T Challenger from manual to power steering.

I purchased a Flaming River steering coupler and am wondering since I need to cut the steering shaft can I use the longer manual steering column and just cut more off or do I still need to use a power steering column?

I have a completely restored power steering column I purchased a few years ago but again if possible I would rather use the current manual steering column which also is in nice shape and already has the correct keyed ignition installed.

Any tips on installing the coupler?
From what I read I need to make my own measurements before cutting.

Thanks.

It is not a lot of work to switch out the ignition switch and key from one column to another.

I would suggest using the factory power column and the factory power connector.

I still see a few guys looking for manual columns, so you could probably sell it for a bit.

I made this switch last year...my favorite mod to date!

Well now I'm being told by one of the power steering rebuild vendors I can't use the Flaming River coupler with a power steering box.

They claim the input shaft on the power steering box needs to be axle to flex in and out with the changing power steering fluid pressure and because the Flaming River coupler is solid and will not flex it will damage the box.

Tech guy at Flaming River doesn't have a clue :clueless:

Manual steering boxes are not affected as they don't have fluid pressure inside.
