Brake Line Installation
« on: May 10, 2005 - 07:40:29 PM »
Hey everybody!  I hope everyone has been doing well.

I was wondering if anyone has any pics of their car without the motor in, but the brake lines still hooked up.  I bought new brake lines for my car, and the old ones were taken off during the restoration, so I have nothing to go by.  I've hooked up the ones on the axle, the flex hoses, etc, but I particularly need help with the routing of the line across the firewall and the one that goes from front to back.  It's a non-power brake car if that makes a difference.   This is probably simple stuff for most of y'all, but this is my first time applying these to a car, so I have lots to learn.  Any instruction and/or pics of these lines would be appreciated!  Have a great week.

4Cruzin,

Hey there, thanks for the reply.  If you have pics with the engine in, that would probably work too!  It shouldn't be this hard to figure out, but since I want to get it right the first time, I figured I'd better ask others who know this stuff.  There are some things you don't want to guess on...you just want to know that it's right.  I appreciate any pics you or anyone else can send, engine installed or not.  Thanks again!

Here's one of the engine compartment. Not sure if the Challenger and cuda are 100% identical or not. All is there except the master cyl. This is also a 73 with power brakes, hope it helps.

Mopar73340 and RedLine,

Thank you both for the detailed pics of the cars.  Wow, it's just what I was looking for.  The willingness of people on this site to help out is amazing.

RedLine, what is the black block with the black knob just to the left of your junction block?  Does that have something to do with the Power brake function?  Mine doesn't have that.

Anyone happen to have the line that runs from front to back?  I should be able to figure out that one if not.

Thanks again!!   ;)

Winston, it is a proportioning valve that lets you control the ratio of front to back line pressure. This valve comes with most aftermarket disc brake kits.   In cars that had front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, there was a brass proportion "block" attached to the safety switch/distribution block that set that ratio.  Since ours was originally all drum, we didnt have that block, but the bracket used to hold it was still there so we used that bracket to hold the new proportioning valve.

RedLine,  very cool.  If I ever convert mine over to a disc brake set-up, I'll become familiar with one.  I better take baby steps though!   ;D

I really appreciate all the helpful pics.  I successfully ran the remaining lines last night.  Now I have another question.  I don't have the 'keys' that lock the flex hoses in place on the plate where the brake lines meet them.  Are these items you can buy or should I be looking for a car in the junkyard that still might have these on them?  I'm not sure exactly what happened to my original ones, but it looks like I'll definitely need them.  Also, are they universal among all Mopars?  Thanks!

Red, I really appreciate you naming the lines in the pic.  I had a little trouble making out which was which.  It willl be very helpful to others who need the same info.

Winston, most of these are the same.  You could poke around the salvage yard or order these from Year One.

Winston, you should be able to find those clips at an auto parts store. I was able to find them in the auto shop at the company where I work. I can't believe they want $3.30 a peice for them. :eekbig:

Those are HEMI clips,   , but seriously, I just used the pic and listing to demonstrate they are available and fit many model years.  No, I wouldn't pay $3 apiece for them either.   :grinno:

The line labeling was really helpful for me too, RedLine!

Thanks too for the info about the clips everybody.  I'll run by NAPA or check some other local places before sending funds to Year One.  It'll be nice to get this stuff completed.

I'll probably be coming to y'all again for fuel tank, sending unit and other installation regarding fuel stuff soon!  :grinyes:  Thanks y'all for the assistance.

Hey Mike,

I would highly recommend Herb Reynolds.  He's out of Delaware, and he's one of the nicest, most sincere guys I've met in the Mopar community.  His phone # is (302)376-8508, and his website is www.herbsparts.com .  If you call, ask for him, and let him know I sent you.  His prices are fair, and his products are excellent.  You can get metal (i got these) or stainless steel from him.  Good luck!
