Ideas ? Car dies in drive ....
« on: April 16, 2015 - 06:20:41 PM »
I have a 340 four barrel Holly double pump , street cam, headers. The cam is nice and prominent at idle but when I put it in D or R it dies immediately. No loose hoses or vacuum ports. Tightened the intake and carb. After it stalls it will not start without priming the carb. Checked and it looks like it's getting gas. Plugs had carbon... Ideas? :(

I have the RPMs pretty at around 1000.  I push on the gas and it will still die, Going to check the timing tomorrow and check the idle mixture screws.

We had a similar thing happen with the Holley DP on my wife's '71 Challenger 440.  We replaced the accelerator pump and it works fine now.  Apparently they have a tendency to blow out on a back fire.

Is that idle RPM in neutral or Drive????

Can't even put it in drive with out revving it. Checked the idle mix screws .... out at  1.5 turns timing was about 15... couldn't see the mark so it was more than 10.

SO that's 1000 RPM in Neutral...

All the tuning should be done with the car is drive.

If the timing was also checked in Neutral, it may be a little low once you pull it into Drive and causing the problem as well.

I would turn the idle speed screw up a bit and see if you can get it to idle in drive.  Even if it is idling high, at least you can recheck the timing in Drive and see where that is.

If you can get it to idle in D I would then drop the idle a little at a time and tune the accordingly.

Get the timing up , you want 14* or so at idle , 36* total & lose the vacuum advance
