Steep driveway suggestions
« on: May 04, 2015 - 08:37:42 PM »
Buying a house and the driveway is somewhat steep, concerned with the challenger bottoming out. It somewhat dips down from the street into the driveway. Future plans are to tear it out completely and regrade but that won't happen for a few years. As a temp fix I'm thinking of dumping some gravel at the base to smooth out the dip, any other suggestions? Thought of ramps but that will get old real quick...

It is hard to tell from the picture...is your driveway gravel and the road asphalt or are they both asphalt?

If yours is grave then I would get some class II or Class III base and level out your end.  If they are both asphalt, get some asphalt cold mix and fix the grade.

Both are asphalt, how long does cold mix take to fully cure and is able to be driven on?

Don't know where your new house is but that could be a PITA if you get snow/ice.

All things I've thought of and am ready for, my daily driver car is not an issue. It's the challenger I'm concerned about

Cold mix is instant once it is tamped/rolled in place.  You can get it 0.5 Cubic Feet bags at most hardware stores.

Any specific brands recommended over others? I'll most likely be buying from a chain like home depot/lowes.

I am not sure about brands but one should be as good as another.

A couple of tips: before placing the mix.  Have someone drive the car while you watch where the car will bottom out. Place a couple of blocks of wood in the tire tracks and try again. You will soon see where and how much lift (Cold mix) you will need.  Before placing the cold mix, sweep (and or wash) the area thoroughly,  Let it dry if you washed it. If you have some old motor oil, or you can by some tach coat when you get the Cold Mix. Spread lightly within the area you plan to patch. Place the cold mix and spread evenly, a rake or 2 by 4 works good. Tamp the cold mix well. If you don’t have a metal tamper, I have used a block of wood.  If you follow these steps it should last a long time.
