How to check rear differential fluid in a 73 Cuda
« on: May 27, 2015 - 07:20:11 PM »
Hi. Sorry for the dumb question. But when I picked up my 73 Cuda 340 out of storage this spring, and there was a puddle of grease on the floor.  It was right under where the drive shaft enters the rear differential.  I drove the car home and checked the following day to see if it was still leaking - and it wasn't.  So either the seal is now working or I am out of grease.  I am pretty sure it's the original stock rear end.  So how do you check the fluid in the rear differential?  I was trying to feel for a plug but couldn't find one.  Thanks!

on a  8 3/4 rear?  See the square thing sticking out of the passenger side... remove & fluid should just ooze out

I see the plug you are talking about.  Thanks.  If no fluid comes out, I am assuming you fill it until fluid starts to come out.

Also, thanks for the great picture. It really helped. I was looking for the plug in the wrong place.

This is why people who own classic vehicles need to own, and study, the applicable Technical Manuals.  I spent many years in the Army trying to get soldiers to do that, and now, civilians.
1963 Dodge M37 (3)
1967 Dodge WM300 (2)
1971 Plymouth Duster
Bought new in '71; I wanted the Challenger but they were $2850; too much $ so I got the 318, 3 speed on the floor, Twister Duster for $2100.

I ain't done yet.
