Power steering low pressure hose
« on: May 09, 2015 - 10:05:48 PM »
I have the Federal pump with the cooler.

In the past I bought the power steering hose OEM replacement with the correct red clamps.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Mopar-A-B-E-Body-Cuda-Charger-Jan-71-Dated-Power-Steering-Return-Hose-/381225862601?hash=item58c2d505c9&vxp=mtr#ht_659wt_900

The issue is that the hose diameter which is correct thicker type, is the wrong type of hose for power steering fluid.
The hose swells up and then eventually leaks.
Auto parts dude said it's made for water not oil.
What he has is a smaller diameter hose that doesn't swell from oil.

Is there a brand of hose that is the exact replacement and thickness made for oil type fluids?
Who carries it?
Mike, Fremont, CA.

Do you  know what the I.D. Of this hose is? I'm thinking 3/8". try to measure with a drill bit if necessary. I am curious myself as I have the Federal pump...

Transmission cooler hose?  :dunno:

:iagree: if you are not concerned about oem then this hose will work fine.  Ran it on a couple cars with no issues  - available at any auto store :2cents: I usually run Gates hoses when not going for oem   :2thumbs:

Yep, stay away from the Date coded return hoses.  My hoses were real soft and came off the steering box when I was backing up.  Fluid everywhere.  11/32 is correct size.  I got Gates brand hose for Power steering return from Rock Auto.
Most parts stores will have 3/8 cooler or transmission hose as a substitute.  3/8 was a bit loose.  11/32 is perfect.
