We're in the (slow) process of putting a Vintage Air system onto a big block (compressor on top). The instructions show only one groove needed.  Also the system came with its own alternator bracket, but I couldn't see any reason to not use the stock brackets.

Hmm..  interesting, I found pictures that used 2 belts, (small block, like mine) and my compressor has 2 grooves also, I assumed I needed 2.
Gotta investigate more. Can you change the pulley on an alternator from 1 to 2 groove later? (Found a 1 groove alternator for sale).

Edit: after some more research: Looks like I need a 2 groove after all, Install instructions pict for a 340.

The lower picture two post up is exactly my setup. Modern sanden compressor only has and only needs one belt.
The last pic looks like a oem type compressor setup to me.

Picture is from Vintage air's install instructions for small block. Mine is a Sanden, bought it last year and it has 2 grooves.

You could call Vintage Air and ask them if you really need two belts or if one would do it.  The other consideration is if you have enough grooves and the right offsets on the water pump and crank pulleys.  I had to get another water pump pulley from Bouchillon to make it all work out.

I mailed them, waiting for a reply. My crank pulley has 3 grooves so I assume one will work with waterpump/PS pump and the other 2 will line up with compressor/alternator, hopefully...
