360 BLOCK NUMBERS
« on: June 02, 2015 - 02:46:43 PM »
I just picked up a 360 assembly and wanted to know what some of the numbers mean.   On the left side of the block it has 3418496 7 360. I have not turned it over to read the right side for the date stamping. But what I want to find out is what the stamping means that is on the front part of the block(left side) right below the head. Stamping says 3W 360R 4229. Can anyone help please. Sorry dont message mush but there is alot of great people here with really good advice. Thank you  :wavingflag:

This one

3418496 7 360

means that it's part number 3418496, a 360 block, and the 7th casting from the master.

The other number on the face of the block just under the left cyl head is the engine identification number, 4229 is the 10,000 year calendar date the engine was assembled so, Feb 24, 1973. ( there should be a casting date under the side of the right hand cyl head M.D.Y probably late 72 casting date. The 3W 1973 Windsor plant, 360 R is displacement and Regualr fuel. There should be a further set of numbers after the 4229, these are the daily sequence number

Thank you for the help. I guess I should check head numbers too. What else should I look for/at? I dont really know what to do with it yet. Maybe a 4bbl carb and intake/bigger cam or  maybe a stroker?? Any ideas??  Thanks again

It depends what you intend to use it for , Cam ,intake, carb, heads & exhaust will all increase performance but they all need to work together .
Stroking it is a good idea also as you can increase compression , 360s never had decent compression & for no good reason a piston to bring them up to 10:1 seems to have been overlooked by every piston mfg , why I have no clue as there are millions of 360s out there , so you can build a 408 CI with better compression lighter rotating mass & internal balance .
