Rack and Pinion options and opinions
« on: June 02, 2015 - 08:58:43 PM »
R&P, is it worth it over some of the steering boxes that are available now.

I am going to convert back to power steering from manual.  The borgeson box is about $750. Ill need a pump, brackets and hoses as well around $250.  and the Classic industries R&P is $1200 but it comes with a PS pump and bracket which puts it much closer in price.

How is the R&P? has anyone used it with stock K frame?

The rack from classic industries looks like it's a unilsteer kit, if that's the case reviews are horrible.  I was considering that system till I read some reviews.

Yep it is, I saw it on speedway motors as well for $999. Thats a shame, are there any other options?

There are not any decent retrofit R&P units. You can make the R&P work well, but you have to swap in a suspension system designed to work within its intended range, ie Alterkation or Magnumforce. So then your steering swap costs $8000, but you get altered spring and shock rates along with revised geometry.

The factory steering system is actually very good , you can use Firm Feel or Steer & Gear steering boxes with far better feel along with offset bushing in the upper control arms etc & get a decent handling car

Can't go past the Borgeson box imho.
Best mod I've made for driveability, feels just like modern steering with tighter ratio & easy fit up, if you use the Bergman steering coupler.

Thanks, I think the Borgeson box seems to be the way to go.
