Different Converter?
« on: May 16, 2005 - 08:25:00 AM »
I just swapped motors from a 318 toa 360?  Just wondering if it was necessary to have a new converter?  I kept my 727 and am thinking that the converter I was using will be suffice??

Am i right? :dontknow:

no . You will need either the 360 converter or a B&M  flexplate designed to maintain  engine balance. I'm sure someone will elaborate further on the subject for you

RAD,
Tell us about the 360. Does it have a bigger cam in it? That means alot in converter selection.

Hey Mike,

Not really trying to find a specific conveter, just wanting to know if the weights were going to be different going to 360 from 318.   Now I just have the converter from my 318 in there, and I am getting a bit of a vibration and was thinking that I may have to get a converter specific to a 360.   If I do I will post more details about the motor; intake, heads, cam, etc.   thanks for the interest to help

I just know that there is an unwanted vibration and the converter is my suspect.  I think everything else is original and should be ok.

ok, i have been reading and am thinking that this engie was balanced with a 904 flex plate.  Now I am running it with the 727, this is probably where the vibration is coming from??    The converter might work if the flexplate on the engine was for 727.

Also when looking on websites such as B&M's they never ask you to specify your engine size, only tranny.  They might say not for big blocks, but that doesn't pertain.   I am now thinking that it will be the flex plate??

any feedback??

there are 2 flex plates available , 12" converter & the smaller platre for 10" or less , they interchange between all 6 bolt cranks except the / 6
the unbalanced converter is cause of the vibration not the flex plate

Like everyone else said....its your Torque converter and not the flex plate..the 360 converter has weights welded to it to keep the engine balanced where as the 318 is internally ballanced and does not need the weights to keep the engine balanced..

Rad, I went with the B&M flexplate for the externally balanced 360. That way you don't have to worry about weights on the converter, and you can go with any converter you want. The Flexplate PN is BMM10242 for a 727. I also went with a Mancini Racing 2500 to 3000 Stall 11 inch.

Thanks Headway,

Looks like I am just going to go ahead and replace the converter.  I thought about converting over to a A518 but I think that the quickest and definately easiest on my pockets right now is replace the converter.  This way I can also get a mild stall also!!
