Head Gaskets
« on: January 29, 2016 - 11:50:17 PM »
I got a set of Fel-Pro gaskets and the head gaskets aren't the same as the ones I've used in the past.  I think they were the   Fel-Pro  Performance line or something like that?

Do I need anything other than a stock head gasket on a  10.1   440 ?

You shouldn't, Felpro is hard to beat for sealing. Edlebrock should work though.

My last set of Fel Pro head gaskets went past 20 years.
I bet they would've gone another 20.

Went with them on my Hemi because of that. Even though they were $220 a set.

I just blew the head gaskets on my 440, but it wasn't stock. Aluminum heads, 11:1 compression. You have a shear force with aluminum on cast iron as the two different metals expand at different rates. If you want some really good head gaskets try the SCE copper head gaskets. Not cheap but a fine set!  :money:

I have the stock 906 heads.  but these are just the standard Fel-Pro that comes in the kit.   it seems like last time I bought a different line of Fel-Pro head gaskets that were more expensive .

Does Fel-Pro make a higher  grade head gasket?   I've looked and I don't see any other in the book maybe they don't make them anymore.  and maybe I don't need them anyway .  I guess that's what I'm really asking.  are standard Fel Pro's good enough.

The standard ones are fine for a 10.1 motor; however to your question yes, Felpro does make higher grades of gaskets but you really do not need them. Normal auto parts store head gaskets are being used by a huge number of users to include racers, high mileage drivers, etc. If you want to go with something like MLS you could, but it would not necessarily be any better in your application than the normal ones.

Google is your friend...

The biggest reason for looking at different gaskets in a 10-1 engine would be different thickness gaskets to adjust quench distance assuming quench is obtainable with the build...

Felpro Performance makes a couple different special head gaskets. The "normal" one is 1009 which is a 4.41" bore design with a pre-flattened fire ring. It's for use with aluminum heads where the std round fire ring will brinnel the heads' surface over time.
They also make a bigger bore version but that's for the aftermarket blocks.
With what you have, the std replacement is an 8519PT1 and should work fine.
