opinion's on fan's cooling systems?
« on: June 21, 2015 - 11:54:34 AM »
my current rad/fan combo does very well until my car sits idle in traffic for long periods. it's not an ideal set up as it has a northern crossflow 22" radiator,a stock shroud that's has plenty of gaps and a hayden hd clutch fan. Like I said works great in all normal conditions but cruise season is here again and despite my efforts in tuning the problem is still there.
so as I see it I have 2 options,go with the HHR fan or scrap it all for a Champion rad and stock shroud. the champion rad option is more cash and more work, the HHR fan is less work less money.

so my question is how well are these HHR fans in heavy traffic at long periods of just creeping along?
the car has a warmed up 440/727 but nothing crazy.

IMO electric fans do not cool as well as mechanical fans do .
High flow water pump & 180* T stat may help .
Once all the coolant is heated it is simply getting the heat tranfered from the coolant effectively , sometimes it is simply air flow out of the engine compartment that causes the problem , i have seen situations with smaller engine compartments or having headers & other accessories adding heat & reducing air flow cause the problem although I am not saying there is an easy fix for this  .

I had same problems for 15+ years....
Now I run smaller pulley on waterpump.....pulley barely clears the bolts clamping the pump.
= better waterflow + better air flow...
Problem solved !!!

I had zero problems with low speed temperatures running an aluminum radiator with an HHR fan. Up to and including long [hot] 4th of July parades of nothing but stop and go. 180* stat. Plan on using the same radiator and fan with the Hemi, we'll see how that works out.

I had to vent my hood to finally get the temps under control on the highway as it seemed to be too sealed and built up negative pressure. Idling or stop and go it ran cool. Once I put  louvers on the hood the 440 stayed cool
