I DID get to see Waylon and Willie and Johnny and Chris Kristopherson  Not sure of the spelling on any of those. At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo back in the 80's.

Damn, I'm glad I got to see Johnny before he left us.

That is true country music, to my ears. That was good stuff.

Nashville country music is total crap..... don't associate country music with what you here in the mainstream.

The new Texas music scene is where the real, quality, country music is at.  None of this pop sounding wanna be, urban cowboy crap you here on the radio.  Check out a few of these Texas country/outlaw country artists I've grown to love over the past 10-15 years.

Stoney Larue
Hayes Carll
Ryan Bingham
Whiskey Meyers
Cory Morrow
Max Stalling
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Robert Earl Keen
Turnpike Troubadours
Shane Smith and the Saints
William Clark Green

...your welcome
Try Wayne Hancock.....

dodj - even if you aren't a country fan - SURELY - you like Johnny Cash? Maybe not. He's not really country, He's just bad ass.

When he sang that song about shooting a man just to watch him die - he wasn't kidding. He did time in prison.

He was probably the first real bad ass to ever put his thoughts to music.
It doesn't make him good or bad - it's just the way it was back then. He was an anomaly at the time. He was dangerous in the 50's.
OMG, I read a book about a bad ass. He graduated with my mom. Same era as Johnny Cash.

Sadly, every stupid rapper is out there with the same message nowadays.

I read a book written by a classmate of my mom's. She graduated in 1955. Little town of maybe 13 graduates. My oh my - were times different back then.
Way - way different. For instance, no interstate highway. People had to go across other peoples property and open and shut cow gates.
Only one person in town had a tv. it was a little circle thing that EVERYONE in town came to look at. In 1955. They used to show movies on a side of a building, there were chairs put up. Every thursday night, it would be projected
against a building wall. Times were different back then. They slept on the roof of the house in summer because it was cooler.
You could not even begin to imagine. Dad told me, when he was growing up, that they dug out a hole in the side of a hill to put there food in, so it would stay cooler. Yes, MY DAD did this.
Not that many years ago. Ice boxes and refrigeration were for rich people.
We take all this stuff for granted. It was not always that way.

People don't know how good they have it in such a short time. I grew up without a/c for quite awhile, and I only had 3 tv channels. It wasn't that long ago, lol.
I still don't own a tv. Haven't since 2000. There isn't anything on that is that important. I don't like a/c either. Once or twice a year. Maybe. I lived down in Houston
for 12 years, and worked in a garage without a/c. (Houston Lighting and Power) You get used to not having it. No biggie.
People cry like little babies if they don't have it now. Even up north, It sickens me. Good gosh, it's been the coldest year I can remember here in the last 20 years. I'm wearing a coat, and people ***** about how hot it is? lol. Crazy, it is.

Don't have a smart phone either, my newest vehicle is a 1997 Suburban, lol. HOW DO I SURVIVE?

It's amazing how complacent we have become. Very few of you would ever last the first week of a zombie invasion, lol.
to test your skills - http://www.amc.com/shows/the-walking-dead/exclusives/how-long-would-you-survive  First time I made it 18 months! lol. I got it down to one day in a hurry, lol.

Just go to town first, lol.

I do like some of his tunes and I liked the movie about him though I forget the name of it.
What turned me off country was Conway Twitty, Nitty Gritty Dirt, Alabama, and others of that era. Just found the twangy sound annoying, so I avoided C&W ever since.

What applies to today's country music as compared to yesterday's real country was said a while back "I would rather hear a fat girl fart than a pretty boy sing".....

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Molly Hatchet
38 Special
The Outlaws
Bachman Turner Overdrive
Black Crows
Early ZZ Top Tres Hombres
Marshal Tucker
Almond Brothers
Charlie Daniels

About as close to country as I get. I'm a rocker! There are a few female country artists I'll listen to but only if I'm watching them... :naughty:
