ball joint removal
« on: May 18, 2005 - 04:40:58 PM »
As you know I am rebuilding my front end.  I was able to remove the tie rods by using a fork, but that was as far as I got.  Next it said to remove the upper ball joints from the A arm and the spindle, but I could not get them to break loose.  I took off the cotter pin and nut so that isnt holding it back, but I am still getting no movement.  Is there something I am missing?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to get the spindle loose from the a-arm? I'm assuming thats what you are doing. Thats just an interference fit...just give it a good couple of GOOD wacks and it will come apart. Now the upper ball joint is threaded into the upper control arm...you need the trick socket to get it out of the control arm. DONT try to drive it out with a hammer..you'll need a new control arm if you do as you'll screw up the threads.

Thanks 71

Can you get a ball joint socket at any parts store or is this something that is specific to mopar and I would have to go through a dealer?  Also which ball joint should be taken out first?  Upper or Lower?

I don`t think it reallymatter which joint you separate first , , I usually split the lower first using the T bar to help then split the upper using the weight of the spindle to help
