Center console lock latch lever screws
« on: June 30, 2015 - 06:11:56 PM »
I have no idea how to attach the center console lock on my 70 challenger. There must be something/part I'm missing. Can someone take a pic of how the lock is attached to the console door?

Don't have my car handy for a pic, but it attaches with two small screws that go through the ears on the lock/button and screw into the lid. Simple

This is assuming you have the right lock...  :-)

You could be missing the screw retainer plate in between the console door halves :2cents:

Yeah I think I'm missing the retainer plate. I had no idea there was something. What does the retainer plate look like? Can I fab one up?

Also I'm interested to see what the door stop cable looks like. I know there's gotta be a pic of the cable and hardware for that too right?

Did a Google search and came up with this cuda-challenger thread.

Thanks JayBee! That's perfect. I can definitely make one of those.  :2thumbs:

Now if I can only see this elusive back plate for the lock.

Not the best pic, but hopefully it will help. I have been fixing up a bunch of consoles the past  few months, and I bought a repop console door for one of them but it didn't come with the retainer plate inside, so I fabbed up a plate from some sheet metal using this original as a guide. They were just swedged on at 2 opposite corners originally so a lot of them break loose over the years, I just used some black ABS cement to hold in place.

I found a photo of the fabbed up retainer plate. Once the two halves of the console door go back together you won't see the ABS cement.

Thanks! That's perfect. Now I know.

Last questions would be what type of screws hold it in? Are there nuts on the back or is it just a coarse thread screw that is held in place by the metal plate?

Just a #6 x 1/2" pan head screw, you can get them at Home Depot in zinc or stainless. I think these were originally zinc but in general stainless looks better on anything that will be seen.
