73 Challenger 340 Starting Issues
« on: August 01, 2015 - 12:39:35 PM »
I have checked my starter relay and know that is not the issue. Its weird it cranks for a really long time until it gets going fast enough to run on its own I don't want to start it so its been sitting all summer. But when I do try and start it I can hear the starter when it finally gets going. Please help I'm not sure what to check next.

if your running an auto trans, check the wire plug connections on the P/N/R switch on the trans, make sure ist a good connection, if its crappy the starter solenoid will play up

I'm sorry my friend,...  but your explenation of your cars sympthoms was hard to understand.

Is your problem getting the electric starter motor to run ? ...or to stop ?
...or is your problem to get your V8 engine to start (as the starter motor is cranking ) ????

Try explaining again please, and I'm sure we help you

The starter is working fine it cranks for awhile until it's able to run then you can hear the starter engaging like when you turn the key on a car that is running already.

Sounds like the starter bendix to me. Not engaging/disengaging properly. Rebuild or replace time.

 ;)

If the inspection plate is not straight when mounted between engine and tranny, the flex plate or torque converter bolts can be hitting it, and it sounds a LOT like starter grinding...

Starter bendix sticking as above...

Faulty ignition switch contact or wiring issue maintaining 'start' position contact (verify starter relay operation with test light to make sure relay shuts OFF)
