360 LA Balance
« on: November 21, 2015 - 07:33:50 AM »
I am rebuilding a LA 360 using different weight pistons and rods so will need to get everything re-balanced.

Question.. How much extra is it to have the crank internally balanced, that is is it major re-balancing?

I am not looking for costs so don't quote me prices as I am in Australia, just the effort involved and is it worth the expense.

I know about the harmonic balancer and flywheel weight differences.

  Thanking you all in advance

easily done , if you are using lightweight rods & pistons you will be close anyway .
You may have to add a little weight to the crank but the lighter the rods & pistons the better off you will be .

Its not to hard for a shop to do, but if you are using the stock crank, it will require mallory, which is a bit spendy. You could make an argument that the stock cast iron crank is not worth the effort. However, if you do balance it, you would be well served to also machine the crank to radius all the journals as well to eliminate potential stress points.

If you are using an aftermarket cast steel or forged steel crank, then its a whole 'nuther ball game.

Thank-you both both for your prompt replies.
Chryco I was hoping that this would be the case but as here in Australia the 360 hasn't had much done to it mainly the 340 which of course is internally balanced from the factory.
A couple of years back I put the crank from a 305ci Chev into a 350 block and had to get it re-balanced adding metal, it ran very sweet.
