rolling inner fenders front and back....suggestions??
« on: August 26, 2015 - 12:28:21 PM »
Ive been looking over the past post about this....I see they sell a tool to roll them for about $150....my car is not together or painted....would it be easier or less hassle just to cut the lip out???  What are the benefits of either and has anybody just cut the lip and smoothed the edge???  It seems if you rolled it it could be a nice place for crap to get and start the rust process??  Thanks for the input.....

I cut mine, welded and then smoothed. Tried rolling the lip and the steel is so thick it started to warp the rest of the Quarter Panel.

I removed the trim rings and cut mine too on my '71.  I drew a line on the lip and followed it with a cutting wheel, then took a sanding wheel to it to smooth it out and sprayed on black rust poof paint to protect it.  Kind of rough technique but no one sees the inner fender, and it was no show car anyway.  Plus I think it looked better without the rings and with bigger tires.

My f/r lips are modified .. did it ~mid-80s.. to accommodate 16x10 (5" bs/0 offset) race rims with 275-45-16 Hoosier autocross tires.... the fronts are easy... my best friend is a body shop owner... he carefully tugged and pulled, as well as rolled, the fronts... one night for both fronts.

The rears were more tricky.... he cut the factory welds, carefully tugged/pulled the lips out, re-welded the lips, epoxy coated smooth inside.   took one-night each for the rears.

The over all result is a factory appearance, whereby, the chrome trim could still be installed if desired (but not needed or wanted by me).   With my car lowered for autocross/road racing... with the then biggest 275-45-16 tires (for competition purposes), the tires cleared within a pinky finger.. no rubbing, even under severe cornering... and my suspension is stiffly setup (1.24 TBs, fiberglass mono Flexaform leafs @ 225#/inch, flat... and stiff Konis red "D" shocks f/r, and sway bars 1.25" f, 1" r)... car handles flat and superbly.. and rides great on the street/hwy (better with BFG T/As 255/60 f, 275/60 r both on 8" wide minilite vintage rims).

The fender mods look stock.. only a well trained eye can tell the difference with another stock Challenger next to mine.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

Thanks for the ideas!  So those who cut the lip off...how much did you leave?

And Mitch...sounds like I just need to bring my car to play at your house;)

I used that Eastwood tool. took about 1 hour per side in the rear .  I did it before the car was painted to reduce any problems with paint cracking

When I replaced my quarter I used 3m glue to put the quarter on.  Do you guys think  it's ok to roll them or would it weaken the glue?  I am not sure of the flexibility when it's cured.

I used a pair of old vice grips with 2,  3/8 rods welded to the jaws. Old school but worked great , just go slow

Man that would make things easy...just can't bring myself to spend $150 on something I'll use once.....

I have a hammer and dolly although I'm no expert with it....I'm thinking based on my non expertise, I'll just cut them...
