BIG BRAKES
« on: September 03, 2015 - 12:18:53 PM »
I have standard power disk brakes up front being that my Cuda is a 73.  I'm wondering about what people are doing for better disk setups.  I see a lot of kits for conversion form drum to disk.  Do we have to change out our spindles?  Is there a decent priced kit with just The larger better rotors, calipers and pads that bolts properly to the stock spindles?  Also if I want to swap my rear drums to disk in the future, do I need a different master cylinder that provides more or less fluid pressure to the rear?

thanks.

I'm sort of in the same boat you are with my 1970. The only kit that I've been seeing out there that is reasonable for the stock disc brake spindles is the one below at Summit Racing.

I'm not really sure why the bigger/nicer kits out there are for the drum spindles?

+1 Dr Diff.  Remember that bigger brakes may require bigger wheels  :2cents:

all the kits on That page/site are for stock spindles but they are also 11" rotors.  That's more or less the stock dia. I guess you get better Calipers.    These are Manual disk kits??? Also apparently the 70-72 spindles are different than the 73-74 Ebody???  more confusion......

I know....think I'll look into that Dr diff site that was posted.

The diameter of the brake rotor really doesn't determine stopping power it's just the larger heatsink to dissipate.

The caliper is what controls more of the clamping I think the stock calipers are just some random one big piston.... not really that great in my opinion.

Good info in here too, especially if your using stock rims (15")

Larger rotors do increase stopping power , the further away from the center of the disc the greater the leverage against the rotor with the same clamping force . you can use the larger Cordoba rotors & the same calipers you have by just swapping the caliper brackets .
There are other options using drum brake spindles such a Scarebird . DR Diff is great to deal with .
