I would use a ABC type. This covers any fire in the car. I working on a spot right now to put one. I want it inside the car where I can get to it fast.
Its just a little 340 with a miss

I have worked in many old datacenters with halon as the primary way to put out a fire. Yes they are outlawed but there were some grandfathered. There was a ton of disco lights and fire engine lights which would go off when the system was activated.

I plan on being outside a car that is on fire when using the halon extinguisher.

trouble with halon Brad, is that it takes the oxygen out of the air. Cant use it inside when belted in....powder

Halon was the darling when it came out.
Problem one - it displaces oxygen. Not good if you are in the passenger compartment. And need to, oh maybe breathe?
Problem two - it is easily blown away by a breeze. Not good if you are outside.

Good idea in theory - totally worthless in practical use. IMHO.

Plus expensive.

I totally agree with Gumby.  Brad, a halon extinguisher will not pass tech on the inside of your car if you get checked for racing. There are more negative than positive results using Halon around humans. They work great in enclosed areas where humans should have an oxygen supply mask , I have been in these situations, hated the oxygen respirator, but had to use them anyways even when there was oxygen present.  There really shouldn't be a poll on this better a beware sign. After you use the abc using the PASS method, you might be a little angry about the clean up, but glad it worked.

P  Pull pin
A  Aime at base of fire
S  Squeeze trigger
S  Sweep at base

Always have your back to an exit  and never use more than 1 bottle.
Pull alarm first if needed before use....Ieee  not inside a car
and evacuate  close door behind you.

There are CO2 extinguishers but it looks like you have to put up with the messy one.

 :bricks1:

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are used for class B and C fires. CO2 extinguishers contain carbon dioxide, a non-flammable gas, and are highly pressurized. The pressure is so great that it is not uncommon for bits of dry ice to shoot out the nozzle. They don't work very well on class A fires because they may not be able to displace enough oxygen to put the fire out, causing it to re-ignite.

CO2 extinguishers have an advantage over dry chemical extinguishers since they don't leave a harmful residue - a good choice for an electrical fire on a computer or other favorite electronic device such as a stereo or TV.

Brad,

I have one of these under the passenger front seat.

But now I'm a little worried about it going off in the car.  Hadn't considered that.

I have something similar ... it has typical mount (plastic piece maybe 1.5" by 4" with clip that collars onto the bottle) .... I can slide rear passenger seat floor mat between that and bottle so it doesn't move .... easy to get to from driver's seat ... easy to move and no permanent mounts.

I am not too worried of it "just letting go" .... now ... if it were just slamming around ... well .... but if its secured in a temperate environment .. I've never heard of any fire extinguisher just letting go.

I would definitely recommend keeping one in the car somewhere.  In high school I had one in my car because I thought it looked cool, but on a sunny Friday on the way to school I was following my brother (he was in a 69 Z28 and I was in my 69 Mach1) he pulled over with smoke coming from under the hood.  I grabbed the extinguisher.  We opened up the hood and flames were coming from the carb area.  I used the extinguisher to put it out.  Turned out to be fuel hitting the headers!  If I didn't have the extinguisher I am pretty sure his car would have burned to the ground!  He still owns that car and I still own the Mach1 :)

Here is a pic extinguisher location in my 70 Challenger:

We have extinguishers since 1985.
Back in the day it was a must if you wanted to register your ride at a car show.

Back in the 60's, we had some big assed CO2 units in the motor mechanics shop, as school issue. We tried to not start any fires, because we ALSO found out that they work awesomely to cool down a case of trunk-hot beer and as a consequence; were often "mysteriously" low or empty.

ABC type in the trunk of every vehicle we have. Put out a few fires in other peoples cars over the years. It's one of those things that's better to have and not need than need and not have... :)

I'm with Alan. If it catches fire, I'll just watch her burn. Probably take a pic for the calendar, LOL. Then start looking for another one.

Too many hours in my car to let it burn. Yes it's insured but there's more than money in it. I always pack an extinguisher and I pull the battery cable when I run it into the garage too. I've never had a fire in the 45 years I've been messing with Mopars but why take a chance. Transportation is parked in the driveway but love is parked in the garage.
