Is this Dana 60 worth running?
« on: October 10, 2015 - 04:02:16 PM »
When I bought my challenger it came with 3 rear ends.  Two 8 3/4, one which is in the car, and a spare Dana 60.

The Dana 60 is from a truck, it had 8 lug drum brakes on it.  I'm curious if it's worth running in my car. I know the obvious answer is yes, but this rear end appears to be offset and I don't believe it's a posi.

Based off the metal tag on the diff cover bolt it has 3.54 gears.  Engine plans are a 512 stroker with a 4 speed A-833

Now I don't know much about rear ends (insert joke here) i mainly stick to engines so cut me some slack

Here are roughly the measurements.  I already know I'd have to get it cut down to use it since it was from a truck with 8 lugs

IF i can use it i'll tear it down, get it blasted and get it cut where necessary.
Thanks!

All you can do is price out new axles, a new powrlok, new bearings and the cost of narrowing. A rough quess is about $1300 for the parts and the labour of having it narrowed correctly (square and true axle housing ends) and the spring perches welded on correctly.
A call to Dr. Diff will get your answers, he can supply the parts or a new bolt-in Dana 60.

Yes you can use it
There are a number of variables here , I ran taperd roller brgs on the axles not the green brgs , I also used the ford housing ends & brgs , but swapped the 8 3/4 brakes over although I had to enlarge the center holes in the backing plate so the brg will fit through , you can use various sure grip systems from Factory power lock or the weaker track lock or the Eaton true trac . You will also have to replace the right axle tube as it will be short for a factory width diff . I think mine was $1500 with axles brgs , new tubes rebuilt power lock clutches & I powder coated it . You may want to mount the spring seats inward with offset mounts & mount the spring seats inward to match
You could buy a whole new unit for approx $2 k
