The reasons not to are time, effort and money. I'm looking for the minimum amount of stuff that has to be changed to get a running, driving car. There are lots of "nice to have things" that add only a few days or a few hundred dollars ... and then when all is said and done, and you've done several nice to have things, you've added months and thousands of dollars.

Certainly worth keeping at the top of your list. My project scope has widened some but powertrain wise I have stuck to it. My main goal is to get a running 3gen Hemi in the car with a 6spd. From there, adding horsepower is just a weekend job when I have more funds to throw at it later.

Hoping I'll start mine about this time next year. Drive by the end of next year. That'll put me at about 2-1/2 years start to finish with pretty significant upgrades, structural repairs, repaint, etc.

Following along for the "E-body GenIII Swap for Novices" like the 518 thread.

A "Gen III Hemi for Dummies" thread would be great!  :grinno:
I feel that I'm asking very stupid questions on the subject sometimes...

I can help where I can, but I constantly ask stupid questions to the guys I refer to on this. It's a necessary evil

Part of the motivation behind this thread is that I have a line on a motor fairly cheap. If I think I can get that motor and get it in the car and running for, say, $1,000, I might do it. If, it's more like $5,000, I almost definitely won't. Anywhere in between, I have to think about.

Fuel system $400

ECU of some sort, OEM re flash or standalone $1500

Motor mounts $300

Headers $450, I'm not sure of stock manifolds that fit, but they'll be $150 or so right there

Cable throttle body $380

Radiator, looked at it, both pass side in/out $240

Not OEM Hemi power steering pump $250, or go manual

Oil pan $250

That's about as little as it could be without the incidentals and setting stuff up. Throttle cable, lockdown linkage from a TB to 727, air filter/intake setup, etc

I'd almost say you "couldn't" get it running on EFI for less than $2500-$3000. Unless you got some fire sale from someone that was midswap and had to dump parts.

I'm thinking you're right. Too bad, sounds like fun, but it looks like I'm sticking with the 340 for now.
