1970 Challenger Gas Cap Questions:
« on: October 04, 2015 - 07:38:09 PM »
If you have a 1970 Challenger R/T how do you know whether or not it came with a "Flip-Top" gas cap ?

Was it standard on all R/T's ?

Was it an option, if so what code ?

Does the "locking gas cap" option insure you get a flip-top gas cap ?

Can you get a flip-top without a locking gas cap ? If so how would you know ?
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

I am no expert but:

Not standard as far as I know
Option? Yes. Not sure if the code would be a trim package code or not
The only "locking" gas cap I am familiar with is the type that goes under the flip top cap
You would have to have some type of cap under the locking cap because the locking cap itself will not seal

Hope this is helpful

My original 1970 Challenger was not an R/T, but it had the flip top and had the locking cap.   Now, the R/T I have now has the flip top but a regular twist cap underneath.  Am not sure if the twist is  factory or not but it fits.

And there's nothing for the rubber cup on the flip top to press on so the flip can rattle....   The OE locking cap matches up with the rubber cup.... I've seen lots of flip caps added with non-locking caps & aftermarket locking caps... But the factory only sold it as a package....

Okay..to summarize...
NO 1970 Challenger R/T left the factory with the "Flip-top" gas cap UNLESS it was coded on the Broadcast sheet for J46 Locking Gas cap. Correct ?
ALL others would have the flat body coloured gas cap. Correct ?

It would seem to me that not very many cars would have got the flip-top cap then :dunno:

Far as I know & I've investigated it some.. J46 or no flip top.... And yet they really did turn up on allot of cars....  I don't have my copy of the options report handy but I'm thinking it was over 8% of all cars & 11% of R/Ts....

My R/T came with a Chrome twist cap which I do not believe to be standard but a dealer add on option. It was not coded for a flip top on the broadcast sheet. I installed a flip top when I restored  the car but couldn't find a factory locking cap. I did find a cap that sealed and fit under the flip top on E bay many years ago and that is what I run now. I wish someone would repop the original locking cap at a reasonable price..
