Painting Aluminum Heads

I am going to pain my aluminum heads hemi  orange and was wondering if I need a special paint or primer that sticks to aluminum  before I paint it Hemi orange? Thanks all.

Mark painted ours Hemi Orange.  But I'm not sure how he did it. Somebody will jump in here.  :wave:

primer is always good
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

For aluminum alloy, I use zinc chromate primer and have excellent results. Epoxy primer will work as well. What top coat formula are you planning to use? Urethane, enamel or other?

Zinc chromate will work well with enamel. Good luck with your paint job!

Wear a respirator, these paints are toxic! :2thumbs:

Here ya go..   Just scroll down the page and the engine paints are there. They make the best Hemi Orange that is available.  There are 2 Hemi Oranges  --  Street Hemi and Race Hemi.  They are close, but not the same...

You can get zinc chromate at most boat repair shops. I've used it on all the alumium and cad or zinc plated parts that need primer. It takes a long time to cure works well.

Self etching spray can primers also work great on aluminum.
