Why do Voltage Regulators go bad ?

I had a 2-3 year old regulator go bad. Bad luck or did something help to push it over the edge ?
I have an original style 35 amp alternator and headlight relays.

Being 2-3 years old, quality of the build may be a factor. Made in China?
Or just bad luck.

I believe a good ground is needed.
Keep seeing people putting extra ground wires, frame , engine.
Need proper size wires to regulator.

I lost one every year on my Cummins Ram , the sealer covering the circuit board would pull away from the case & water would get in behind & short the reg , adding silicone around the edges may extend the life
