2012 5.7 hemi swap - 65rfe trans?
« on: October 24, 2015 - 06:37:52 PM »
Hi guys, I am new to the forum and I have been restoring my 74 challenger for a few months. I got to the stage that I have to make some decisions and engine and tranny are next on my list. My initial project was to use a 402 mopar crate that I bought 2 weeks ago with a 727 trans, but I sold the engine this week and I'm back to zero.
I got a 2012 ram 1500 from an auction 4 days ago and I am planning to use the 5.7 4th gen hemi and if possible the 65rfe. I spoke with the guys from hotwire and bouchilon, and it seems that we still do not have the computer part ready for the 65rfe. What are my options? Could I use the 65rfe as 545rfe doing some type of convertion?

What are the parts from the Ram that I could use in my challenger. I know the headers and the exhaust system can be used, what else? Breaks?

Bouchillon guys recommended a custom fuel line and gas tank replacing the stock tank, is this really necessary?

Can someone help me with these questions? I do not have good knowledge with engines and this type of set up, so any insight is really appreciated. I am trying to keep the expenses as low as possible since I am farming the paint job and it will be expensive.

Thank you all!!!

There isn't a whole lot on that truck that will "reasonably" work on your car. The engine of course will need swapped in with the addition of headers and adapter mounts..along with the required electrical for the EFI. The truck timing cover is going to put the accessories up high, which is not what most old Mopar swappers prefer. The timing cover and matching accessories from a car are more sought-after, and yes the accessories are different between the covers.

The EFI fuel tank is definitely necessary, to some extent. There are several off the shelf options that will work fine [Tanksinc.com]

You're likely into new water with the trans if swap companies can't support it.

Brakes, axle, any sort of steering components aren't going to match up to anything on the Challenger. Good luck!

I'm just starting out my swap, searching for info also, a 6.1 Hemi in a 70 Challenger, (see my thread here) the tranny was the hardest thing to decide on for me. I will get a new tank with a built in pump, new radiator with fans also, have not decide where to get the stuff yet. True with the truck timing cover, you might wanna change that so they mount lower.

I am really worried about the trans. I spoke with Chris from hotwire and he is currently working on some type of solution for the 65rfe. He said we will have something in the next 2 weeks.
Does anyone know where can I find the timing cover and accessories to replace the truck sttuf cover?

If I can't use the 65rfe I will probably go manual since I will have to buy a trans. Tremec 5 or 6 speed are my preference . If someone is selling plase send me a pm.

There's many timing covers on e-bay, and pricing is not bad, not sure on model years, if it fits all etc, you might wanna try Bouchillion or Modern Muscle.

I buy some things off of moparpartsdirect.com. It is a dealer in Michigan, I just paid about $236 for the car front timing cover shipped to my house.
Also bought a take off car intake from Petty Garage for $105 shipped to the house. It was complete with injectors, file rails and I think it had a MAP sensor in it.
