Will this distributor fit?
« on: October 21, 2015 - 10:26:47 AM »
Does anyone know if this distributor will fit my '68 Barracuda 318?
It uses a GM cap and coil and it's bigger in diameter than the Mopar unit.....I think it's about 5" diameter.
I'm just worried about it clearing the firewall.....my engine is out and I didn't think to measure that first!

Anyone used these ?
Pros, Cons, Good, Bad ?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Not sure why you would want it , it was barely decent in Gms , I assume they improved it , it should fit in an E body Ok but A body would be tight

Why HEI at all , it was never a very good design , there were constant problems with the modules & wires to the module as well as bruning through the rotors & grounding to the dist shaft !
Mopar has easy to adjust fully adjustable dist ,  MSD also make them , you can run Mopar chrome , Rev-N-Ator or FBO ECU , or MSD 6Al but there are huge
I prefer stand alone coils , you have the older oil filled or the newer compact coils .  ideally 4 coils with a crank trigger is the best system

I "thought" HEI was the way to go - forgive me for this - but they worked great on all my Corvettes...! (I told ya to forgive that !)

But....I read a LOT of your posts and you really seem to be the answer man.
I'll take your word on this and just use a quality Mopar electronic and leave it at that.

Thanks.....

Jeff

Another alternative is Firecore.  You can get a Ready to Run or a system very similar to Mopar electronic ignition.

LOL
Just trying to add perspective , HEI really was OK for stock vehicles but was not as reliable as the Mopar system , it was also RPM limited & was not really good after 5000 rpm or so , as well as the problems I mentioned , going to HEI to me is a step down from a Mopar system . Having said that the newer Mopar systems are not as good now as they once were , when they were installing 100s / day on the assy line the ECU s were better made , new Orange box ECU are problematic now , probably Chinese made now .
The latest Mopar dist available from Dave @ Roseville or Mancini are fully adjustable & look factory so that would be my choice . Firecore is great too .
The best system is crank trigger with 4 coil pack , this is the most stable & allows longer build time for each coil , this is what all of the factories now use in production . Might as well add EFI while you are there too LOL

:iagree:  I just dropped in Firecore RTR distributor, coil and wires into a 440 in my '68 Charger.  They are getting more and more popular due to their performance.

Mancini has them or you can email Ron Wilson (Firecore distributor and VERY knowledgable about Mopar engines/performance) at ron.wilson1@live.ca.
