And the engine cranked wiring directly to the battery? Because I thought that it shouldn't have, not that I 've tried or anything...

I connected it directly first and then connected it to the ignition switched positive line that was going to the MSD 6al unit.  It doesn't have a ballast resistor in it at this time.  So I am going to call msd tomorrow and ask if I need to put it back in until get the 6AL unit back.  It runs fine, but I it dawned on me that maybe it should have the ballast resistor in.  Does anyone know if it is ok to run  a msd 2 blaster coil without a ballast resistor ?

I was concerned about that.  But I wanted to make sure the problem is the msd box.  Could I have damaged the coil driving if a few miles already and it still run?

I'm missing something here. What do you have triggering the coil? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. You have ignition +ve connected to the coil? No ECU? Where do the two small wires that come out of the body of the distributor go?

I have a power lead that is ignition controlled on and off to the positive side of the coil.  Then I have two wires to the distributor and one wire from the distributor to ground.  No ballast resistor or ECU connected.  It is a MSD billet dist
