Worth saving? If so, at what price?

A friend of mine has a mini-yard going where he and his partner keep their parts cars.  It looks like they may be losing the space, though, and if that's the case most of what's there has to be sold.  One of the cars he's got is a '70 Challenger.  Typical basket case E-body, needing floors, trunk, extensions, rear rails, quarters, fenders, etc.  It's really just a shell at this point, other than the rear valance.  It was completely parted during the early '90s and there's not a hell of a lot left.

The car is an oddball, at least to me.  It was a V2 car with a white bucket interior.  It's not an R/T, but it's a 383HP car (JH23N0B).  Rallye hood, Rallye dash, HD suspension, big drums, all the R/T goodies.  Think A66 car, but with a 383 Magnum.  It had turndown exhaust, rather than the bright exhaust extensions and cutout valance (I've not seen the original one on this car reproduced yet--no cutouts or slots whatsoever, not even for bumper guards).  It was built with Rallye wheels but I don't know the size for sure.  My mind is fuzzy since I haven't seen the car in over a year, but it might have been a column shift.  I can't swear to that.  Mind you, virtually all the good stuff is gone except the leaf springs, front suspension, and oddball rear valance.  The numbers engine was replaced with a 440 more than 30 years ago; so fuggedabahdit.  The numbers trans might be hanging around somewhere, though.   Unfortunately, though the fender tag and VIN are there and it has a clear title, according to the one partner (who first bought the car in original condition in 1976 or '77, again in '82 or '83, then again in '89) there was no build sheet ever found in the car.  He claimed he had it apart more than once including stereo installations and a repaint, and it just wasn't there.

Neither one of the guys that own the car want to see it crushed, but one has no interest in repairing it and the other already has an even-worse '68 Charger project on his hands so it'll never happen (and he knows it).  Is something like this even worth tackling, and if so, what's a fair price on such a, er, gem?  I mean, it is an original HP car, but not an R/T.  For you "one of" guys, my information tells me 949 non-R/T, non-SE Challengers were built with the 383 Magnum and automatic.

Interesting car. As far as the price/value, I would start at scrap price; meaning what is it worth in scrap (weight); there is the bottom end. Anything north of that should be gravy I would think. Not sure it is a prime candidate for a full resto, but there are a lot of guys who don't have a lot of money who would love a project, maybe a race car, race car inspired restomod type deal (think Mad Max). Beyond that, maybe it would still be a donor car for frame/sub structure pieces. Don't let it get crushed!

Without seeing pictures, I would guess it is worth somewhere around 1500- 2k, maybe even 2500 to somebody.  Big block, 1970, good color combo- especially with a white interior, clear title, fender tag and VIN tag, IMO someone will save it.

I don't think it's in grave danger of being crushed, really.  Both guys appreciate what it is, but also appreciate how far gone it is too.  I briefly considered making an offer on it, but even if the price was eminently reasonable, I already have the cops on my butt a couple times a year for the cars I've currently got.  There's no room here anyhow.  I'd have to store it offsite, which I'm already doing with a '61 Plymouth Suburban project.  Plus, I already have a Challenger which I much prefer over the '70 looks-wise, and a straight restoration isn't something that interests me as a project.  I love restorations, mind you, as long it's someone else's homage to how the factory did it.  I'm also a four-speed guy; all my projects are manual transmission and I don't think I could bring myself to cut that one.

If it seems like I'm trying to talk myself out of it, that's only because I am. :biggrin:
