Bolt on , but i generally port the heads especially the exhaust side so I would port match the manifolds

 318's can make surprising power when combo is right. A horse per cube is attainable with mild combinations, especially with 302 heads w/ port & polish and 1.88/1.6 valves.

I absolutely agree!
They do suffer from poor compression ratio and poor head flow.
I am a big fan of the Hughes Whiplash cam.
A 3:55 rear gear and a moderate stall converter will make a world of difference too.

318 is a GREAT little engine!

All true  , a factory 70 318 was rated for 230 hp IIRC the 5.0 L mustang engines were rated @ 225 into the 90s & the 318 only had a 2bbl .
 the 318 can be a very strong engine built right with the correct problems addressed , the 273 was a strong runner too & was smaller but with better parts in it .
